Assignment: Describe what the poem means to you. Discuss the use of metaphor to create analogies in the mind of the listener. How does the impact of this poem change when you hear it as apposed to reading it? Use specific examples from the text.

The poem “We Are More” means a lot of different things to me. First it makes me proud of being Canadian. It makes me feel this way because Shane Koyczan read this poem at the 2010 Winter Olympics for everyone in the world to see. So all the people that thought things like “We are all very polite,” are not true. Not all of us are like that. Same with we live in Igloos and ride polar bears to school. The poem also means to me that we are still a new country and we still have a lot to learn and see, which Shane does say in the poem. Some metaphors he uses in the poem is “Because we are more than a laundry list of things to do and places to see.” Which means that we are more than you think we are. He also says “We are young, we are cultures strung together then woven into a tapestry.” Which means that we are made up of many different coulters put together to make Canada. When you read the poem it as a lot different from hearing it. When you watch the video and hear the poem you really get to hear when he changes his voice so you can different ideas about the words than if you just read it you get that same feeling.
